Drogheda vs Dundalk marred by ugly scenes as fans run onto pitch to taunt rivalsTHERE were ugly scenes at full-time of Drogheda United's derby win at home to Dundalk on Friday night. A section of the home support ran onto the pitch over towards their counterparts and were seen goading their rivals over Drogs' 1-0 victory. This in turn led to some Dundalk supporters coming onto the pitch too and even some punches appearing to be thrown. While unsavoury moments like this are rare in the League of Ireland as they are in GAA and other sports, this is the latest in a concerning trend of late. There was trouble prior to the FAI Cup final between Bohs and St Pat's as well as a Derry City fan being attacked by a group of Shamrock Rovers 'supporters' last month.
Footage from this most recent brawl has been widely condemned by League of Ireland supporters regardless of who you follow. It's particularly disappointing as the Louth derby was the televised match this week although RTE's cameras didn't show any of the nastiness that unfolded. MATTERS DURING THE 90 As for the action prior to the full-time whistle, Kevin Doherty's side were full value for the three points particularly in the first half as both Dean Williams and Dane Massey went close. First, Andy Boyle had to be well placed to block after Williams rounded Nathan Sheppard.
Then later on Massey’s shot was goalbound before John Martin headed clear. Pat Hoban has only scored three career goals against their local rivals and he shot wide in a rare Dundalk attempt on goal in the opening half. The goal came shortly after the break through a Williams penalty. Greg Sloggett had been deemed to have brought Darragh Nugent down in the box by ref Rob Hennessy. Williams sent Sheppard the wrong way to notch his second for his new club.
Stephen O’Donnell made two subs at the break, including the introduction of Steven Bradley, and he injected verve into their attacking play. At one stage he forced Sam Long into a good save. Then late on, he curled a shot wide. That was as close as Dundalk came. Drogheda looked more likely and were hardly hanging on. Adam Foley’s 25-yard thunderbolt crashed off the bar.
